What A Day At Camp Looks Like
A typical Day
Camp days are structured to balance learning, movement, creativity, and rest so students stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed.
Students rotate through guided activities throughout the day rather than sitting in one long class.
A typical day includes:
Group warmups and rhythm activities to start the morning
Learning new songs step-by-step on the ukulele
Small-group band practice with teacher guidance
Snack and lunch breaks
Outdoor games and movement time
Creative projects and collaborative activities
Short breaks between activities as needed
Preparing songs for the Friday performance
Activities change regularly to match elementary-age attention spans, and students are supervised by staff during all indoor and outdoor portions of the day.
Camp Highlights
Throughout the week, students work together to create their own band experience.
Campers will:
Learn real songs they can continue playing at home
Form a band, choose a name, and work as a team.
Design a band poster and logo
Sing and play musical games together
Try simple songwriting and lyric activities
Play group rhythm and coordination challenges
Enjoy daily outdoor play and group games at the nearby Bryant Park
Final concert performance
The focus is confidence, creativity, and teamwork — not perfection.
Supervision & Teaching
Ukulele Band Camp is led by Jeremy Hiniker, owner and teacher at Anthem Academy of Music in Bloomington, alongside co-teacher Maya Hilten. Together, they create a dynamic, team-taught experience where students grow as both instrumentalists and singers.
Jeremy leads the ukulele instruction, helping students build strong fundamentals in chord playing, strumming, rhythm, and ensemble skills. Maya leads the vocal component, guiding campers in healthy singing technique, pitch matching, harmony, and expressive performance. Throughout the week, they work side by side—modeling collaboration, encouraging creativity, and offering hands-on support so each student feels confident and successful.
With two experienced teachers in the room at all times, campers receive individualized attention within a small, welcoming group setting. Students remain under consistent adult supervision during all indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring a safe, supportive environment where everyone can feel comfortable, included, and excited to make music together.
What Makes This Camp Different?
Every child participates from the very first day. The ukulele is intentionally chosen because beginners can make real music quickly, even with no prior experience.
Students learn simple chords step-by-step and play together as a group, so no one feels put on the spot or left behind. By the end of the week, campers can strum songs, keep rhythm, and perform as part of a band.
The focus is not perfection — it is success. Children leave the week feeling capable, proud of what they learned, and excited to keep making music.
